Mobility budget: a step in the right direction?

The Chamber of Representatives has given the green light for the mobility budget. That budget provides employers with the opportunity to choose more sustainable modes of transport, like the (electrical) bike, carpooling vehicles and public transport.
 
The mobility budget - an alternative for the company car or a mobility allowance – is intended to discourage excessive car use. Commuting by car causes not only massive congestion, but also noise- and air pollution and it has a negative impact on physical and mental health. The mobility budget is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately the car still takes the lion’s share in commuting.
 
By means of the mobility budget you may exchange your company car for a budget that you can spend within a three-pillar budget.
 
1) A more eco-friendly company car
The company car remains an option, but you need to choose an eco-friendlier version.
 
2) Sustainable modes of transport
Your mobility budget allows you to buy a travel pass for public transport. The members of your family may also buy tickets for public transport from the mobility budget. In this way employees have an alternative to the company car for a family excursion.
 
The budget can also be used for the purchase, maintenance and equipment of an (electrical) bike, hoverboard or electrical scooter. Employers may finance company bikes and the cycle allowance from the mobility budget.
 
If you reside within a range of 5 kilometres of your place of work, you may also pay for your accommodation costs from your mobility budget. After all, this is also viewed as a solution for the mobility problem.
 
3) Balance in cash
If your budget shows a balance at the end of the year, your employers will pay this out after deducting 38.07% for social security.
 
Moving on your way to work
Each kilometre that you go on foot every day will reduce your chance of obesity by 4.8%. People who regularly commute by bike will on average weigh 4 kg less than those who mostly commute by car. Employees who bike to work have on average one day a year less off for sickness. Cycling reduces the impact of stress and you produce endorphins and serotonin that reduce your stress level.
 
Employers
Employers may pamper their cycling employees by providing showers, quality bicycle stands and charging stations for bikes, although the cycling allowance still remains the main incentive for employees to cycle.
